You sit down to write a caption and your mind goes completely blank. You've posted once this week already and you feel like you've already said everything there is to say. Content block is real, and it hits every single business owner at some point.
But here's the thing: content block isn't actually a creativity problem. It's a systems problem. Once you have a simple framework for where your content ideas come from, you never have to stare at a blank screen again.
Here's the framework I use with every client to generate around 30 post ideas in under 20 minutes.
The 5 content pillars system
Instead of trying to think of individual posts, think in categories. Every piece of content you create should fit into one of five buckets. Together, these buckets give your audience a complete, compelling picture of your business.
Pillar 1: Behind the scenes
- A day in the life of running your business
- How you prepare/make/create your product or service
- Meet the team, even if that's just you
- Your workspace, your tools, your process
- What's coming next / what you're working on
Pillar 2: Tips and education
- Three things customers always ask you (answer them)
- Common mistakes people make in your industry
- How to get the most out of your product/service
- A myth about your industry you want to bust
- Seasonal tips related to what you do
Pillar 3: Social proof
- Share a customer review (screenshot or designed graphic)
- Feature a customer and their story
- Before and after (if relevant to your service)
- A transformation or result you're proud of
- User-generated content, repost a customer's photo/story
Pillar 4: Products and services
- Introduce a product (even one you've had for years)
- Highlight a specific feature or benefit
- Show your product in use, in context
- A seasonal or limited offer
- Compare two options and help people choose
Pillar 5: Your story and values
- Why you started the business
- A challenge you've overcome
- What you believe about your industry
- Something you've learned recently
- What makes you different from competitors
"If you can write two posts per pillar per month, you've got your entire month planned in 10 minutes."
How to actually use this framework
Take a blank piece of paper (or a notes app) and write down the five pillars as headings. Then set a timer for 15 minutes and brainstorm at least three post ideas under each one. Don't judge the ideas, just get them down. At the end, you'll have at least 15 ideas, probably more, and you only need 8–12 posts a month.
The beauty of this system is that it naturally creates variety. Your audience gets value, personality, proof, and offers, all in the right proportions. Nothing feels spammy because you're only ever selling in one pillar out of five.
The repurposing trick that doubles your content
Once you have an idea, you can often use the same core content in multiple formats. A tip you write as a caption can become a carousel. A behind-the-scenes story works as a Reel or a Story. A customer review can be turned into a designed graphic or a video testimonial.
So effectively, each idea from your brainstorm could generate two or three pieces of content if you need more volume. One idea, multiple executions.
A quick note on seasonal content
One of the most reliable sources of post ideas you'll ever have is your own calendar. Every month has seasons, events, holidays, and dates that are relevant to some audience. Map out the key dates three months ahead and you'll always have hooks to plan around, even if the content itself is just using a seasonal theme to talk about what you already do.
Content block only happens when you're trying to create from scratch in the moment. With a system, you're always working from a list.
